Understanding the 6 Steps of First Aid for Gastric Acid Reflux Disease

Symptoms of stomach acid reflux or what is often called GERD are symptoms that cause sufferers to feel uncomfortable because the acid from the stomach rises back up into the esophagus. Typical complaints include heartburn, which is a burning/hot sensation in the chest and throat. Other complaints can include a bitter or sour taste in the mouth, nausea, and vomiting. There are 6 steps that can be used as first aid when stomach acid is rising, namely:

  1. Loosen clothing that is being used
When stomach acid is rising, it is highly recommended for sufferers to loosen the position of the belt or unbutton the pants that are being used. A belt or pants button that is too tight can cause pressure on the stomach to increase, thus triggering an increase in stomach acid.
  2. Elevate head position
If the patient feels stomach acid rising at night or at bedtime, then the patient is advised to sleep with a higher head position. A sleeping position that forms an angle of 30-45 degrees with the supported back is expected to relieve complaints of acid reflux.
  3. Upright into a sitting position
If elevating the position of the head cannot reduce the complaint, the patient is advised to get up immediately and sit up straight. The position of the body that sits upright can reduce the pressure that occurs on the valve between the esophagus and stomach so that it is expected to stop the movement of stomach acid that is rising.
  4. Consume drinks containing ginger
One of the drinks that can be used as first aid when stomach acid is rising is a drink that contains ginger. This is because ginger contains ingredients that are thought to relieve irritation that occurs in the digestive tract and prevent stomach acid from rising. Apart from that, ginger also contains anti-inflammatory substances in it which can relieve nausea which often occurs when stomach acid is rising.
  5. Consume honey
Honey is one that can help relieve symptoms of stomach acid when it is rising because the content in it can protect the esophagus wall from irritation, and even reduce inflammation. Sufferers can consume honey directly or mix it in warm water.
  6. Chewing gum
When stomach acid is rising, chewing gum can relieve unpleasant symptoms that occur because the chewing motion can increase saliva production and cause more frequent swallowing movements. This action can dilute and clear stomach acid in the esophagus and help relieve symptoms of stomach acid.

In addition to the six steps above, there are also several ways to deal with rising stomach acid, namely by drinking warm water or taking ulcer medicine. Meanwhile, to prevent stomach acid from rising, namely changing meal portions to be smaller but more frequent, avoiding types of food that can increase stomach acid, such as eating spicy or sour foods, and not lying down after eating.

If the first aid steps taken do not reduce the symptoms that are felt when stomach acid is rising, then immediately check and consult a doctor so that it can be followed up quickly.
