Tingling and Weakness on One Side of Your Body? Beware of Serious Nerve Disorders

Tingling sensations may seem trivial. Likewise, weakness in the hands or feet is sometimes mistaken for fatigue. However, if these symptoms occur repeatedly, persist for a long time, or are only felt on one side of the body, they could be a sign of a serious nervous system disorder.

Why Does Tingling Happen?

Tingling, or paresthesia, is a pins-and-needles sensation or numbness that can occur in various parts of the body, especially the hands, feet, and head. This condition can be temporary or long-term.

Temporary tingling generally occurs due to pressure on the nerves, for example when sleeping on your arm, sitting cross-legged for too long, or after exercising, and usually disappears once the pressure is reduced.

However, if tingling persists without a clear cause, it could be a sign of a specific health problem, such as a nervous system disorder. Therefore, a medical examination is necessary if tingling occurs frequently and does not subside.

Why Can the Nervous System Be Disturbed?

The human nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord, and a network of nerves throughout the body. When any part of this system is disrupted, whether by inflammation, pressure, trauma, or certain diseases, it can cause various symptoms.

Common Symptoms of Nervous Disorders

Here are some symptoms that may appear:

  • Tingling that persists or comes back again
  • Numbness
  • Weakness or paralysis on one side of the body
  • Movement coordination disorder
  • Difficulty speaking or walking

These symptoms may indicate a neurological disorder, such as:

  • Stroke
  • Herniated Nucleus Pulposus (HNP) or pinched nerve
  • Brain or spine tumors
  • Brain aneurysm
  • Traumatic nerve injury

When to See a Doctor?

If you or someone close to you experiences the following symptoms, you should immediately consult a neurologist:

  • Tingling and weakness lasting more than a few days
  • Feeling of weakness or numbness on only one side of the body
  • Accompanied by dizziness, difficulty speaking, or seizures
  • Urinary or defecation disorders
  • Pain radiates from the neck to the hands, or from the waist to the legs

Early detection and prompt treatment are essential to prevent further complications, including permanent disability.

Don't underestimate tingling and weakness. It could be your body's way of signaling that something is wrong with your nervous system.
