From scrolling through social media, working on a laptop, watching TV, to playing games—our lives are almost inseparable from screens. While these activities are unavoidable, staring at a screen for too long without a break can trigger an eye problem known as Computer Vision Syndrome.
This condition is increasingly experienced by young people and digital workers, especially in the era of hybrid work and online learning.
What is Computer Vision Syndrome ?
Computer Vision Syndrome also known as Computer Vision Syndrome is a collection of symptoms that appear due to the use of digital devices (such as smartphones, tablets, laptops) for a long time without sufficient rest.
Symptoms include:
- Tired and dry eyes
- Blurred or shadowy vision
- Headache
- Neck and shoulder pain
- The eyes feel hot or gritty
- Difficulty focusing after staring at a screen for a long time
Why did it happen?
Computer Vision Syndrome can occur when staring at a screen, we tend to:
- Blink less frequently (normally 15–20 times/minute, when staring at a screen only 5–7 times/minute)
- Excessive exposure to blue light
- Staring at the screen too closely
- Not paying attention to room lighting
All of these things make the eyes work harder than they should.
What are the consequences if left unchecked?
The symptoms may be mild at first, but if left untreated, Computer Vision Syndrome can affect:
- Gradual decline in vision quality
- Decreased productivity and focus on studying/working
- Increased risk of long-term eye disorders, such as chronic dry eyes or even excessive visual fatigue
Tips to Prevent Computer Vision Syndrome
Simple Tips to Prevent Computer Vision Syndrome :
- Use the 20-20-20 Rule
Every 20 minutes, look away 20 feet (6 meters) for 20 seconds. - Blink More Often
Be aware of your blinking habits to keep your eyes moist. - Adjust Screen and Room Lighting
Don't be too light or too dark. Use “night shift” or “dark mode” if necessary. - Correct Screen Position
Position the screen about 40–70 cm from your eyes and slightly below your line of sight. - Use Artificial Tears
If your eyes feel very dry, you can use eye drops as recommended by your doctor. - Have Regular Eye Exams
Especially if you often experience eye complaints while working or studying.
When Should You See an Eye Doctor?
Get checked immediately if you experience:
- Blurred vision that lasts more than a few days
- Eyes feel sore, red, or burning
- Headache accompanied by eye complaints
- Eyes get tired easily even after resting
Computer Vision Syndrome isn't a serious condition, but it can be very disruptive and reduce quality of life if ignored. Young people need to start realizing that their eyes are an irreplaceable asset.
