Nearing Your Due Date? Get to Know 5 Signs of Normal Delivery You Should Know

During pregnancy as the due date approaches, anxiety and questions about the signs of labor may begin to arise. It is important to recognize the signs of labor so that you can prepare yourself well and get timely medical help. Here are 5 signs of normal labor that you need to know:

1. Regular and Increasingly Strong Contractions

Contractions are one of the most common signs of labor. You may have felt false contractions (Braxton Hicks) before, but labor contractions have a different feel. Labor contractions will feel more regular, stronger, and more frequent as time goes on. They feel like a dull ache in your stomach that comes and goes.

2. Mucus mixed with blood comes out (Bloody Show)

A few days or even hours before labor begins, you may experience a thick, bloody mucus discharge from your vagina. This mucus can be pink, brown, or slightly bloody. This mucus discharge indicates that your cervix is beginning to thin and open in preparation for labor.

3. Water Breaks

Water breaking is a fairly obvious sign of labor. The amniotic fluid that protects the baby in the womb will break, and you will feel fluid coming out of your vagina. Amniotic fluid is usually odorless and clear in color, but it can also be slightly cloudy or mixed with blood. If you experience water breaking, contact your doctor or go to the hospital immediately.

4. Changes in Baby's Position

As labor approaches, your baby will usually move down into your pelvis. This can make your belly appear to drop more and you may find it easier to breathe because the pressure on your diaphragm is reduced. However, you may find yourself urinating more often because the pressure on your bladder is increased.

5. Back Pain and Cramps

Back pain and cramping are common signs of labor. This pain is usually felt in the lower back and can spread to the thighs. Cramps can also be felt in the lower abdomen, similar to menstrual cramps. Back pain and cramping will become more frequent as labor gets closer.

When to go to the hospital?

If you experience one or more of the above signs of labor, contact your doctor or go to the hospital immediately. Especially if you experience:

  • Regular and stronger contractions every 5 minutes for an hour
  • Heavy bleeding from the vagina
  • Water breaking
  • Reduced or no baby movement is felt
