Understanding Hernias: When a Body Organ Is in the "Wrong Room"

Have you ever heard the term "hernia"? In the medical world, this condition is called a hernia . A hernia occurs when an organ (most often the intestine) presses against and protrudes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or supporting tissue.

Think of your abdominal wall like a bicycle inner tube. If there's a thinning or tearing of the inner tube, it will bulge out. These lumps typically appear in the abdomen, navel, groin, and even the scrotum in men.

Are Hernias Dangerous?

In general, hernias are not always an emergency. However, if left to enlarge, hernias can cause severe pain or serious complications such as intestinal strangulation . If the intestine becomes trapped, food flow is disrupted and intestinal tissue can die. Therefore, surgery is often the best solution to repair them.

Two Options for Treating Hernias

If your doctor decides you need surgery, there are usually two main methods offered:

1. Open Surgery (Conventional)

This is a classic method where the doctor makes a single incision (about 6-8 cm) in the area of the lump to push the organ back into place.

  • Advantages: The operation is quicker, local anesthesia can be used (not necessarily general anesthesia), and the risk of the hernia coming back tends to be smaller.
  • Disadvantages: Scars are more visible, post-operative pain is usually more pronounced, and recovery time in the hospital is slightly longer.

2. Laparoscopic Surgery (Small Hole)

This is a modern technique using a small camera inserted through several small incisions (only the size of a keyhole).

  • Advantages: The incisions are very small so aesthetics are maintained, pain is much less, and you can return to normal activities more quickly (usually within a week).
  • Disadvantages: The operation process takes longer and the success rate depends heavily on the doctor's skill to prevent the hernia from recurring.

What to Do If There is a Lump?

Don't self-diagnose or go to a massage therapist (as this can make your intestinal obstruction worse!). The correct steps are:

  1. Consultation with a General Surgeon at EMC Hospital Tangerang: The doctor will conduct a question and answer session and a physical examination.
  2. Additional Examination: If necessary, the doctor will request an ultrasound, CT Scan, or MRI to see the condition inside the stomach in detail.
  3. Standard Treatment: Make sure you choose a healthcare facility that has international accreditation (such as JCI) to guarantee the safety and quality of medical procedures.
