Optimal Growth, Age-Appropriate Development
Every parent naturally wants their child to grow up healthy, active, and develop appropriately for their age. However, a child's growth and development isn't solely measured by weight or height gain. A child's ability to move, speak, interact, and learn are also crucial factors that need to be monitored from an early age.
Regular monitoring of growth and development helps detect growth disorders or developmental delays early, so that treatment can be carried out as early as possible and the results are more optimal.
Why is Growth and Development Monitoring Important?
Childhood, especially the first 1,000 days of life, is a critical period for brain and body development. During this time, children experience rapid growth and development. If a disorder is identified but not detected early, it can impact a child's learning ability, health, and even quality of life in the future.
In Indonesia, child growth and development remain a major concern. According to data from the Indonesian Nutritional Status Survey (SSGI), stunting rates among Indonesian children remain quite high, despite a decline in recent years. Furthermore, developmental delays such as speech disorders, motor skills disorders, and social interaction disorders are still common, but are often recognized late by parents.
Many parents only realize there is a problem when their child enters school age, even though early detection and stimulation provide much better results.
What is Assessed in Child Growth and Development?
1. Child Growth
Growth is related to changes in a child's physical size and needs to be monitored regularly, ideally every month, especially in toddlers.
Things that are assessed include:
- Weight
- Height or length of body
- Head circumference
- Child nutritional status
Children with good growth generally have:
- Weight and height according to age
- The body is active and does not tire easily
- Good appetite
- Skin, hair and eyes look healthy
- Growth according to age curve
Growth monitoring usually uses a growth chart so that doctors can assess whether a child's growth is in accordance with age standards.
2. Child Development
Development is a child's ability to reach certain stages according to their age.
Some aspects of development that are assessed include:
- Gross Motor Skills
Large motor skills such as:
- Prone
- Sit
- Stand
- Walk
- Run
- Fine Motor Skills
The ability to use small muscles, for example:
- Holding objects
- Stacking blocks
- Draw
- Eating alone
- Language and Communication
Includes the ability to:
- babbling
- Saying words
- Understanding instructions
- Communicating with others
- Social and Emotional
Judging from the child's abilities:
- Responding to parents
- Play together
- Showing emotions
- Interact with the surrounding environment
Signs of Growth and Development to Watch Out For
Parents need to be more alert if they find the following signs:
- Difficulty gaining weight
- Child is late in sitting or walking
- Not yet able to speak according to age
- Difficulty focusing or less responsive
- Prolonged decreased appetite
- Head not yet upright when starting MPASI
- Not responding when called
- Rarely makes eye contact
For example, 18-month-olds generally begin to say a few meaningful words and are able to walk independently. If these abilities haven't emerged, further evaluation is recommended.
Factors Affecting Child Growth and Development
Child growth and development is influenced by various factors, including:
- Adequate and balanced nutrition
- Child's health condition
- Parenting and stimulation patterns
- Sleep quality
- Social environment
- genetic factors
Excessive exposure to gadgets can also affect children's language development and social interactions if not balanced by active communication with parents.
How to Support Optimal Growth and Development
Here are some simple steps that parents can take:
- Provide Balanced Nutrition
Make sure your child gets the following intake:
- Carbohydrate
- Protein
- Healthy fats
- Vitamins and minerals according to age
- Make sure your child gets enough sleep
Sleep plays an important role in the growth and development of a child's brain.
- Invite children to play and interact
Play is the best form of stimulation for children. Simple activities like talking, reading, singing, and playing together greatly contribute to a child's language and social development.
- Limit Gadget Use
Excessive use of gadgets without supervision can reduce children's active interaction with their surroundings. Children under 2 years old are not allowed to use gadgets.
- Have regular check-ups with a pediatrician
Regular check-ups help monitor growth and detect any developmental disorders early.
Benefits of Growth and Development Monitoring
Regular monitoring provides many benefits, including:
- Early detection of growth and development disorders
- Helping children achieve their optimal potential
- Supporting children's physical and mental health
- Providing appropriate stimulation guidance for parents
- Helps determine intervention as early as possible if needed
When Should You Consult a Pediatrician?
Do an inspection immediately if:
- Child growth is not according to age
- The child is experiencing developmental delays
- Parents have concerns regarding their child's growth and development.
- Children experience eating disorders or have difficulty interacting
- The child appears inactive or has lost previously acquired abilities.
The sooner a developmental disorder is recognized, the greater the child's chance of receiving optimal treatment.
Monitoring a child's growth and development isn't just for when they're sick, but is a crucial part of maintaining their overall health. With attention, stimulation, good nutrition, and regular checkups, children can grow healthily and develop to their full potential.
