This condition doesn't occur suddenly, but rather progresses through several stages of cirrhosis, indicating the severity of liver damage. Each stage has different characteristics, risks of complications, and treatment approaches.

4 Stages of Liver Cirrhosis That Determine Its Severity

Liver damage generally progresses gradually. The following are the stages of cirrhosis.

Stage 1: Liver Inflammation (Steatosis)

The initial stage before cirrhosis develops is characterized by fat accumulation and inflammation in the liver tissue. This condition is known as steatosis or fatty liver , which can progress to chronic inflammation if the underlying cause is not promptly addressed.

Some conditions that can trigger steatosis include:

  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Chronic viral hepatitis

Stage 2: Formation of Scar Tissue (Fibrosis)

At this stage, some of the normal liver tissue begins to be replaced by scar tissue, but the liver can generally still function quite well because there are still quite a lot of healthy areas.

Stage 3: Damage Becomes More Extensive (Liver Cirrhosis)

At this stage, scar tissue has replaced most of the liver tissue, causing organ function to begin to decline significantly. Blood flow within the liver also begins to be disrupted, increasing pressure in the portal vein (portal hypertension).

Symptoms that start to appear frequently include:

  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Enlarged abdomen due to fluid accumulation (ascites)
  • Swelling in the legs (edema)
  • Bruising or bleeding easily
  • Itchy skin
  • Decreased muscle mass
  • Easily tired and weak
